In 1999, at the tender age of seven, Eric Saunders began a motorcycle-racing odyssey that has taken him to many victory lanes and on many special journey's, including a speaking engagement at the Pentagon.
Eric's Father, Irish, through a relationship with friend and business colleague, Tony Stewart, began TSRMX – a racing team built specifically around Eric's motocross efforts. Stewart is an owner of several motorsports ventures in addition to his successful driving career. Seeing a similar drive in Saunders that reminded him of himself, Stewart awarded the young driver a riding opportunity, provided he was diligent and performed throughout his educational process.
Saunders has taken the opportunity to an amazing level. With more than 600 wins to his credit, Saunders has proved he has the talent to compete in the top levels of motocross racing at local, regional and national events.
This year, he continued riding again for Tony Stewart Racing Motocross, with his Father, Irish as team manager and under the watchful eyes of his Mother, Sheila, sister, Nicole and brother, Garrett.
Eric crashed at his home track on August 28th, the day before his 18th birthday, while practicing for the Steel City pro national. It was initially believed that his spine was severed, but it turned out to only be stretched. Eric was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend and was airlifted shortly after to Indianapolis so he could receive the best possible care. He underwent surgery where doctors placed rods in his spine.
Since then, Eric has been transferred to RHI in Indianapolis, Indiana for rehabilitation. Currently, Eric has no feeling from his chest down, but has progressed to sitting up for 2-hour stints each day and, with the use of weights, is regaining his upper body strength.
Eric continues to be in great spirits. He has an amazing faith that God will heal him and that he will be able to ride once again. The thoughts and prayers have been a tremendous support to him. He couldn't get through this without them.
